Chithra Cijith is the Founder and Artistic Director of Mudra Dance School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich traditions of Indian classical dance. A highly accomplished performer and instructor, she specializes in Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam, two of India's most revered classical dance forms. She also serves as a Guest Lecturer at High Point University, conducting Bharatanatyam workshops and educational programs that introduce students to the art, culture, and history of Indian classical dance.
Chithra began her formal dance training at a young age under the guidance of Natyasree Manorama Balakrishnan and continues to refine her artistry under the mentorship of Kalamandalam Baghyalakshmi. Her talent and dedication were recognized early in her career when she was awarded the prestigious Kalathilakam title in 1997 for excellence in the performing arts.
Over the years, Chithra has performed on numerous distinguished stages across India, including the renowned Melpathur Auditorium, earning appreciation for her expressive artistry and technical excellence. In May 2026, she achieved a significant milestone by being awarded B-High Grade in Mohiniyattam by Doordarshan, one of the most respected recognitions for classical artists in India. She was also honored with an invitation to perform at the prestigious Koodalmanikyam Temple Utsav – National Dance and Music Festival, a nationally recognized platform that showcases distinguished dance and music artists.
Within the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina, Chithra is widely respected for her contributions to the cultural community. Through performances, workshops, and educational initiatives, she has presented Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam at prominent venues, including Sri Mata Hindu Temple, Triad Hindu Temple, and numerous multicultural events organized by Indian and Asian community associations.
Her unwavering commitment to promoting Indian classical arts and fostering cultural appreciation has earned her the prestigious Nadanamanjari Puraskar from Ulanadu Sree Krishna Swami Temple. This honor recognizes her outstanding efforts in organizing dance and music festivals and her continued dedication to preserving and sharing India's rich artistic heritage with diverse audiences in the United States and beyond.
